Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif Staying Alag-Alag for a Reason

Monday, November 9, 2009

and recently set many a tongue wagging when they came separately for the celebration party of Priyadarshan’s National Award winning film ‘Kanchivaram’. The duo kept distant from each other during the party and even left separately, sparking off the rumours that all is not well in their paradise.

But the distance between the lovers, it now turns out, was created deliberately by them.

The reason?
No, they did not have a lovers’ tiff. Rather they were keeping away from each other because they did not want to give the press a chance to photograph them together. But pray! Why?

In words, they are saving the photo op for a special reason. They plan to make an appearance together very soon.

The mercurial did not disclose anything more, leaving us guessing what is it he and Kat are up to! An announcement of engagement? Or just a professional commitment featuring the two of them together.

The heads are already buzzing with guesses.

'Kurbaan' is Mature than 'New York' : Saif Ali Khan

A love story set in the US and exploring a terrorism angle. Sounds familiar? We saw it in director Kabir Khan’s New York. Incidentally, director Rensil D’Silva’s upcoming film Kurbaan is based on a similar theme. But it’s very different from ‘New York’, says the movie’s leading man Saif Ali Khan, who also disclosed at a press conference in Dubai that he was offered a role in ‘New York’.

“I had gone through the script of New York since I was offered a role in the film. I have not seen the film except for the songs and I think it has a very young storyline with college guys partying at pubs and having fun on the campus. On the contrary Kurbaan is very mature,” Saif told mediapersons.

While in ‘New York’, John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh played students at an American university, in ‘Kurbaan’ Saif and Bebo play professors at Delhi University. Their love story begins and develops in Delhi but culminates in New York.

Like her beau, Kareena too feels the movie will have the viewers on the edge of their seats.

“The film is gritty, gripping and cutting edge,” she said.

The duo is equally impressed by the movie’s bold posters which have created quite a sensation.

Saif excitedly admitted that he’s got a good feedback for the posters, while Kareena said the posters capture the emotional and raw intensity of the film.

‘Kurbaan’ is set for release on November 20. The film also stars Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, Om Puri and Kiron Kher.

Girls all over Emraan Hashmi and Muah! Muah!

The serial kisser was at the receiving end of kisses from his female fans in Kolkata last week while promoting his upcoming film Tum Mile, co-starring Soha Ali Khan.

Emraan Hashmi was caught off guard while he was about to step onto an escalator in a mall where the promotional event was being held. A group of his female fans approached him quietly and threw themselves upon him.

One of the girls planted kisses on Emi boy’s cheeks. In the melee, Emraan’s shirt ripped apart. The actor took this outpouring of adulation from female fans sportingly, even though he emerged out of it with lip-stick stains on his cheek and a torn shirt.

The next thing Emraan did was to buy a brand new shirt and replace it with the torn one.

Emraan made a light of the whole incident but his wife Parveen might be feeling a bit jealous.

Kurbaan Pre-release Review
Kurbaan‘Kurbaan’ is a thriller movie directed by Renzil D’Silva, which casts Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi, Om Puri, Rupinder Nagra, Diya Mirza as a part of the star cast. The movie is a new experiment for Karan Johar, who for the first time has tried a movie set against the backdrop of terrorism. The movie has good music, for which the credit goes to Salim Merchant and Sulaiman Merchant. The lyrics, penned down by Niranjan Iyengar and Irfan Siddique, are also highly impressive. It is scheduled to hit the theaters on November 20, 2009, under the banner ‘Dharma Productions’.

‘Kurbaan’ rotates around the life of Avantika (Kareena Kapoor). Avantika is a Psychology Professor in New York, who returns to India owing to the failing health of her father. She manages to get a job at the prestigious Delhi University. Here she meets Ehsaan Khan (Saif Ali Khan), who is working as a substitute teacher in the same University. As expected, both of them fall in love with each other and eventually get married as well. Avantika’s father initially takes a stand against the marriage, since Ehsaan is a Muslim. However, he agrees later on and blesses the new-weds.

Things are going well, until the couple flies to New York, to start a new life. It does not take long for Avantika to see that she had fallen into a trap. Everything seems to be well planned and decisively moved by Ehsaan. He dislikes the houses that Avantika selects for them and the one that he chooses looks creepy. Avantika finds her new surrounding extremely conservative. All the people close to their house are highly obliging to Nasreen and her husband, Bhaijaan. They have their own code of conduct and everyone seems to abide by them. Avantika smells something wrong in the whole affair.

Avantika soon realizes that her husband is a dangerous terrorist, who has used her for his own purpose. Ehsaan also keeps her under house. She eventually finds out that he is planning to hijack a flight. Vivek Oberoi, in the role of a journalist, is also a passenger in the same flight. The climax of the movie brings the struggle of Kareena and Vivek, against Saif. Will they be successful in their fight against Ehsaan? The movie sounds interesting and is very much different from the conventional Karan Johar movies. Let us how the audience reacts to this one!

Bolly Movie Paa Stays Below Rs150 mn Budget

Expensive make-up and creative inputs by industry stalwarts notwithstanding, megastar Amitabh Bachchan has managed to produce his much-awaited movie "Paa" within a set budget of Rs.150 million.

The movie, about a child suffering from progeria - a rare disease of premature ageing among children, has been produced under Amitabh's production banner AB Corp.

Discussing the film's budget, the 67-year-old posted on his blog: "I think we set out to make this film with certain definite plans. It would not be a penny over the Rs.15 crore (Rs.150 million) budget we had decided upon; indeed it is nominally better than that - it's Rs.14.75 crore (Rs.147.5 million)."

Amitabh plays Auro, a progeria-afflicted child in the movie, while his real life son Abhishek essays the role of his father. International make-up artists had been roped in to take care of Amitabh's look for the film.

The actor wonders whether producers who project a "modest amount" of Rs.50 crore-60 crore for their films, realise that "films of such high budget dimension need to do twice (more business) and more in returns at gross box office in order to get a net benefit to bring home".

"A Rs.60 crore film would be required to do a gross twice the amount if not more. Print and publicity add on extra money and by the end of the day the film must perforce do close to Rs.150 crore in order to break even and make money. Does the market have the capacity for such returns," he asks.

However, the actor, whose production company incurred losses after making films like "Tere Mere Sapne" and "Mrityudaata", says money matters are "mundane" and "irritating".

Best Paid Job in India?

Best Paid Job in India?
It’s a well-known fact that Bollywood stars charge big money to perform at events. We see pictures of Bollywood biggies attending such dos, of known and obscure industrialists, on a daily basis. Media bytes with the star, on the occasion, reveal that he or she is an old friend of the host. But that’s far from the truth. These star appearances come with a high price tag too.

Bollywood stars charge a bomb to show up at these events. And this isn’t about shaking a leg on the stage. It’s about just being there.

“There are thousands of super rich families in small towns and India’s interiors who can shell out lakhs to just have a star make an appearance at their do. They don’t mind paying whatever price the stars demand,” reveals Atul Shah, a well-known publicist.

Most transactions are done in cash to evade income tax.

Managers and secretaries of a star negotiate the appearance. On record, these actors never acknowledge the existence of such deals.

So how do we know who’s paid how much?
Enter Joe Alvarez, a thirty something professional who shuttles between Goa and Mumbai. He’s currently camped in the city scouting for a Bollywood star who can add glamour to his boss’ son’s wedding back in the coastal state.
The wedding scheduled for December 26 is being held at the posh Cidade De Goa Hotel. The star has to be present for half-an-hour; accommodation and ticket fares are to be borne by the host.

‘Salman won’t budge for anything lesser than Rs 1 crore’
Joe starts from the top with a phone call to Salman Khan’s manager Alok Mathur. After asking a volley of questions, Mathur finally talks business.

“Salman Khan doesn’t come cheap, hope your budget fits the bill,” he says.

Joe’s initial offer is Rs 25 lakh, which is turned down immediately. “What are you talking? That’s just the quarter of what Salman would charge,” informs Mathur.

Joe is bewildered and reconfirms what he heard. “Yes it is Rs 1 crore, why don’t you talk to someone who suits your budget. Salman wouldn’t budge for anything lesser than this,” he retorts. Joe promises he’ll call back after talking to his boss.
Next, he calls up Mahima Chaudhary’s residence to request the contact of her manager. Her mother Usha Chaudhary answers the call. Without asking too many details she explains, “Mahima charges Rs 10 to 15 lakh depending on the stay. But since Goa is closer to the city she can come for Rs 10 lakh.”

He then contacts Rebecca Pereira, Sushmita Sen’s manager.

“I can’t give you any details without knowing your boss’s name. First give the exact details of what he wants,” she says. Then, Joe offers Pereira Rs 30 lakh (for her star boss’s appearance).

“Are you paying in cash? But that still wouldn’t do unless you tell me who you are representing,” she retorts.

A few days later, she repeatedly asks for the budget and the mode of payment. She’s told the cap has been raised to Rs 50 lakh, for one major face, or three mid-level stars. Even the name of the businessman is disclosed.

“Why don’t you send me a mail, then we shall revert with the exact price,” she tells him.

Joe moves to his next target, Santosh Mezari, Manisha Koirala’s accountant.

He doubles up as the actor’s secretary and willingly quotes a price without much hesitation. “Manishaji will take between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 6 lakh for a visit wherever in India. You can call me just a few days before the trip. I’ll take care of everything,” he assures. There’s no bargaining or further questioning.

‘Hrithik Roshan does not attend any ordinary bash. It’s Rs 1.25 crore, even if it’s for half an hour’
Talent management agencies run the profiles of dozens of Bollywood stars. In the West, such firms arrange work for film actors. In India the concept changes drastically and could entitle negotiating appearances at weddings at a stipulated fee. The transactions are mostly done in cash without paying taxes.

This is how Joe gets hold of Ankur Sagar of Carving Dreams. “Hrithik Roshan doesn’t attend any ordinary bash. It’s Rs 1.25 crore, even if it’s for half an hour,” reveals Sagar. That leaves Salman far behind. But Sagar handles some smaller stars as well.

“Minissha Lamba and Ameesha Patel can come for Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh. I can even get Mallika Sherawat for Rs 20 lakh, though she’s abroad most of the time,” he boasts.

Joe then contacts Shams Lalji who works for photographer Atul Kasbekar’s agency, Bling, which manages celebrities.

‘Akshay doesn’t come for as little as Rs 30 lakh. Dimple Kapadia Might’
Akshay Kumar’s manager Lokesh Bali refuses to talk on the phone. He wants to meet and discuss the matter personally at his office. The Rs 30 lakh quoted to him is too less. “I can get you other stars like Dimple Kapadia within that range, Akshay doesn’t come for that price,” he says.

He doesn’t relent, in the next call a few days later, and insists that a meeting is necessary. He even refuses to acknowledge the offer he made a few days back.

“When did I talk about Rs 30 lakh? I think something is fishy about this whole thing,” he says. Joe puts his suspicions to rest by agreeing to send him a mail on the shaadi.

‘Priyanka Chopra takes between Rs 30 to 50 lakh per appearance’
Priyanka Chopra’s manager, Chand Mishra is more forthcoming. “The appearance fee for Priyanka is between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 50 lakh. This can be negotiated at a later date,” he concludes. He too wants a meeting.

The next call is to Dharam Oberoi, Sanjay Dutt’s secretary. His initial reaction is that Dutt doesn’t go to weddings or parties. After much convincing, he quotes a figure of Rs 70 lakh.

“He can’t come down to anything below this,” he concurs. When called back a few days later, he sounds perturbed, as there was no reply to his offer.

“Where have you been for so long? You don’t even take my calls,” he states. He’s told that the boss in Goa declined the offer due to the steep price, as the budget is Rs 50 lakh. He readily agrees without much hesitation.
“But you have to pay at least Rs 20 lakh in advance. Sanjay will be in Bangkok at that time and I will have to arrange for his return from there,” he sums up.

‘Katrina Kaif charges Rs 30 lakh for cutting a ribbon’
Joe now turns to Sandhya Ramachandran, Katrina Kaif’s manager. After a long introduction, it’s time for business. “Rs 50 lakh is the right amount. She anyway charges Rs 30 lakh for ribbon cutting,” she confides.

But Ramchandran’s not sure about the appearance, as it is too close to Christmas, which Kaif celebrates in the UK. Apparently Ms Kaif hasn’t attended a wedding (one that is all expenses paid) and charges 50 per cent higher during peak season. It’s time for Joe to move on.

Poonam Damania, Kareena Kapoor’s manager promises a good deal for Joe. “Kareena will take Rs 40 lakh. I can get you Saif for another 40, though I don’t handle his portfolio,” she promises.

She adds that the rates are fixed as the couple is very popular.
